The California Clean Money Campaign started its efforts in March, 2002 when it became increasingly clear that politics in California is dominated by the money chase, and not by the wishes of the voters.
Our mission is to educate Californians about the need for cleanly financed state elections and the need to bring the already proven and high successful Clean Money public financing innovation to California.
Clean Money would have to be passed by the voters in an initiative either put on the ballot by the legislature or by the people through signature gathering.
There is a lot of work to do between now and then to make sure a majority of Californian voters understand Clean Money and know how it is the best -- and perhaps only -- way to revitalize our democracy.
As you can imagine, there won’t be any support from Big Money to help Clean Money pass. California’s campaign, modeled after Clean Money victories in Arizona and Maine, is an entirely grassroots campaign. Laying the groundwork for the initiative will involve:
| • | Helping decide what proposal for handling candidates from different parties works best for California's unique size and diversity by seeking feedback from interested people. |
| • | Pursuing Clean Money legislation to either get the legislature to pass and put it on the ballot or help build awareness and support for an initiative. |
| • | Supporting local efforts to pass Clean Money in cities as a way to help build deep Clean Money constituencies and bring the benefits of Clean Money to local governments. |
| • | Building a broad and diverse winning coalition of political interest groups who know that Clean Money is the best way to make their own voices heard. |
| • | A grassroots speakers program that will reach out to thousands of Californians with volunteer speakers at churches, schools, clubs, and private groups. |
| • | A widespread media campaign to communicate with Californians through both celebrity and non-celebrity Clean Money supporters making their voices heard. |
