AARP-California Joins Other Leading Senior Groups to Endorse Proposition 89
Seniors Affected By Political Corruption
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- AARP-California,
which represents over 3 million seniors in the state, has
joined other leading senior groups to endorse Proposition
89, a November initiative to stop political corruption.
AARP will announce their endorsement at a press conference
in Sacramento Tuesday and will be joined by representatives
of the California Alliance of Retired Americans, the
Congress of California Seniors, the Gray Panthers, and
Older Women's League of California.

"AARP endorses Prop 89 because it creates a level playing
field for fair elections. Politicians won't spend all their
time raising money, they will focus on their job-taking
care of the needs of the voters and being accountable to
all of us, not the special interests," explained Tom
Porter, AARP-California State Director. "Big money
interests have too much power in Sacramento that drowns out
the voices of regular Californians."
"Seniors are particularly hurt by the political corruption
in our government. As a vulnerable population, they are
affected by our broken healthcare system, high drug prices,
polluted air and water, and other results of the corruption
in Sacramento," said Michael Lighty, Campaign Manager of
the Yes on 89 Campaign.
Proposition 89, The Clean Money and Fair Elections Act of
2006, changes the broken system of campaign finance in this
state that contributes to the widespread corruption in
government. Proposition 89 places strict limits on
contributions by corporations, unions, and well-heeled
individuals to political campaigns. Prop. 89 also
completely bans contributions from lobbyists and state
contractors to candidates, and sets up a system of "clean,"
or public, financing for political campaigns that will
allow candidates to give up private fundraising. Prop. 89
contains strong enforcement mechanisms, meaning that if
politicians break the law they can end up in jail.
